TOKYO – December 6, 2024 – Musashi Energy Solutions Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Musashi Seimitsu Industry Co., Ltd., held its “Hybrid SuperCapacitor (HSC) Innovation Forum” at Congress Square Nihonbashi on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. More than 120 industry participants attended the event.
During the forum, panelists discussed and explored the potential applications of Hybrid SuperCapacitor energy storage devices, which feature groundbreaking technology developed by Musashi. They also addressed the energy challenges arising from the growing number of data centers required to support generative AI.
Panel Discussion
The following executives participated in the panel discussion:
- Hiroshi Otsuka, Musashi Seimitsu Industry
- Takeshi Izaki, NVIDIA
- Bob Myers, Flex
- Toru Sawamura, Sakura Internet
- Koji Takahashi, Musashi Energy Solutions
What is a Hybrid SuperCapacitor (HSC)?
A Hybrid SuperCapacitor (HSC) is an energy storage device that combines the characteristics of both an electric double-layer capacitor and a lithium lithium-ion battery. It has both high power density and energy density, and is capable of rapid charging and discharging, has a long service life, and is safe. As an energy solution for data centers and other mission-critical applications, HSCs are attracting increasing attention for their ability to support power supply stability and energy conservation.
Musashi’s Goals
The forum focused primarily on how power consumption in data centers will steadily increase with the rapid spread of generative AI. To help meet this demand, Musashi is building a new plant in Minami-Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture, to increase the production of HSCs, which will help solve this energy challenge.
At the new plant, Musashi will make full use of its strength of “Monozukuri (manufacturing) capabilities” to achieve QCD+E (Quality, Cost, Delivery, and Environment) evolution by introducing new technologies and optimizing production processes, aiming to improve its business competitiveness and profitability.
HSCs are expected to see strong demand across various applications. One key area is addressing power challenges in data centers, which was the focus of this forum. Additionally, HSCs are being jointly developed with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for use in the railroad industry. The technology is also well-suited for semiconductor manufacturing plants, where it helps prevent instant power loss and blackouts and auxiliary power sources in fuel cell vehicles. Overall, demand for HSCs is anticipated to grow rapidly across these diverse sectors.
Musashi will cooperate and move forward with all the related parties who spoke at the forum and accelerate its transformation to become an “Essential Company” that solves social issues through its business activities and whose existence is expected by the world.
