By achieving HCAI (formerly OSHPD) and IBC seismic standards, Musashi’s Hybrid SuperCapacitor technology assures uptime for healthcare systems and electronics during catastrophic events.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – March 9, 2026 – Musashi Energy Solutions (MES), a leading developer of Hybrid SuperCapacitor (HSC) cells and systems for mission-critical backup power, addresses the growing demand for disaster-ready energy by achieving seismic certifications for its ESS400-S Hybrid SuperCapacitor system.
This milestone helps ensure that healthcare systems and critical electronics stay powered during an environmental crisis. The ESS400-S offers mechanical and operational durability that exceeds that of standard battery backup systems. The certification solidifies the ESS400-S as a premier choice for California’s strictly regulated healthcare sector and other high-risk seismic zones where failure is not an option.
The ESS400-S energy storage system passed rigorous testing to meet the International Building Code’s (IBC) and California’s HCAI (formerly OSHPD) standards for use in healthcare facilities.
During testing, the Hybrid SuperCapacitor-equipped ESS400-S unit underwent shake-table assessment in accordance with ICC-ES AC-156, “Acceptable Criteria for Seismic Certification by Shake-Table Testing of Nonstructural Components.” As part of the procedure, the unit under test (UUT) was operational before and after shaking and remained fully operational after the tests.
“Our priority was to comply with the regulatory and safety requirements of critical healthcare infrastructure projects,” noted Naman Buch, MES’s Applications Engineer. “By securing these seismic certifications, we are giving healthcare providers a pre-validated solution that guarantees power reliability when it matters most. This achievement is more than just a certification; it’s about providing mission-critical infrastructure with the confidence that their facility and people are safe, regardless of environmental challenges.”
Designed for mission-critical electrical systems and hospitals worldwide, the ESS400-S is a seismic-rated system that replaces traditional, environmentally unfriendly lead-acid and lithium-ion backup batteries. The ESS400-S is designed for 3-phase Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPSs), providing a safer, more efficient, and sustainable approach for the most demanding applications.
Musashi’s ESS400-S Systems Feature:
- Increased safety for mitigating thermal runaway (fire) hazards commonly associated with lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) and eliminates the use of toxic lead-acid in high-maintenance, valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLAs).
- An unprecedented 15+ year lifespan and 1,000 times longer cycle life than traditional batteries.
- Exceptional peak power management for dynamic loads such as AI data centers and high-cycling large medical equipment, supporting millions of charge-discharge cycles.
- Four times the temperature range and 25-52 percent less footprint than traditional batteries – ideal for HVAC-constrained and space-hospital electrical rooms.
- Lower operational expenses, offering competitive Cap-Ex and significantly lower Op-Ex costs for mission-critical operations.
