BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – March 4, 2025 – Musashi Energy Solutions (MES), a leading innovator in energy storage technologies, is proud to announce that its innovative ESS400 Energy Storage System has received the significant Underwriters Laboratories’ UL 1973 listing. This achievement signals the company’s continued leadership in providing safe, reliable, and high-performance energy storage solutions. The ESS400 integrates MES’s prismatic Hybrid SuperCapacitor (HSC) cells, improving safety, increasing operating life, and providing environmentally responsible energy storage solutions for diverse industries.
The UL 1973 listing for the ESS400 reinforces Musashi’s commitment to ensuring that its products meet the highest performance criteria. UL 1973 is a globally recognized standard for product safety in applications utilizing stationary energy storage systems. This listing further enhances the ESS400 energy storage solutions’ trustworthiness in critical applications such as data centers, generative AI, healthcare, electric transportation, and renewables.
The ESS400’s remarkable performance is a result of integrating the company’s proprietary Hybrid SuperCapacitor cells, which are specially designed to provide high power and fast recharge and discharge response. Musashi’s pioneering use of the world’s first prismatic design for Hybrid SuperCapacitors has led to outstanding durability, boasting a lifespan of up to 20 years and the ability to perform millions of discharge/recharge cycles before reaching end-of-life (EOL).
In addition, Musashi’s Hybrid SuperCapacitors have been tested per UL 9540A procedures and did not experience thermal runaway at the cell level—a fault condition commonly associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries. Unlike traditional battery-based energy storage technologies, which can pose risks due to overheating and potential fires due to unforeseen fault conditions, MES’s cells have a significantly higher level of safety. The absence of any possibility of thermal runaway in the HSCs enhances the operating safety of the ESS400 system and the facilities they support.
“Receiving the UL 1973 listing for our ESS400 Energy Storage System is a significant achievement and makes it simpler for our customers to deploy our solution and meet NFPA requirements,” said Frank DeLattre, President – Americas for Musashi Energy Solutions. “Our commitment to innovation and safety will always be our top priority, and the successful completion of UL 1973 certification underscores our dedication to providing the market with state-of-the-art energy storage systems that are safe and reliable while providing exceptional value.”
With UL 1973 certification and a focus on long-term reliability, the ESS400 is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of energy storage systems for mission-critical applications.
