January 23, 2025 – We are honored to have IEEE Xplore and editor Ashok Bindra publish an article on the “Rise and Limitations of Hybrid SuperCapacitors for AI Data Centers” by our Director of Engineering Services Oliver Ulibas in IEEE Power Electronics magazine!
In this open-access “Expert View” column, Oliver explores the growing role of supercapacitors (also known as ultracapacitors) in energy storage fueled by advancements in materials science. Integrating cutting-edge nanomaterials like graphene and lithium-ion doping has significantly enhanced their performance and safety. Hybrid SuperCapacitors (HSCs) contain no metal oxides that pose a risk of thermal runaway—which can lead to failures and fires. Oliver also highlights the innovative HSC technology, which combines lithium-ion with electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) to outperform traditional battery solutions, including lithium-ion, VRLA, sodium, and zinc-based systems. While HSCs offer safe and reliable energy storage, they also come with certain limitations, which he discusses. Thank you again to IEEE Power Electronics Society!
